How to Prepare for Your Headshot or Branding Session: A Step-by-Step Guide

Headshot and branding photography is more than just a picture—it's an opportunity to communicate your personality visually. Whether you're aiming to update your professional profile, website, or create a cohesive brand, preparation is key. Here’s a handy guide to help you look and feel your best on the day of your session.

1. Define Your Goals

Before you book your session, take a moment to think about what you want your images to convey.

  • Your Brand: Are you going for approachable and friendly, or professional and authoritative? Or, a little of both?
  • Where will you show them off?: Will these images appear on your website, LinkedIn profile, or marketing materials?
  • Message: Think about the story you want to tell. Your images should align with your core values and business mission.

A clear goal will guide every decision—from styling to the choice of location—and ensure your photos are both strategic and authentic.

2. Research Your Photographer

Choosing the right photographer is essential. Look for someone whose style matches your vision. To do this:

  • Review Portfolios: Check out the photographer's previous work to ensure their approach aligns with your desired aesthetic.
  • Check Reviews: Read testimonials to understand their process and client satisfaction.
  • Discuss Your Goals: Have an initial consultation with your photographer to ensure they understand your brand and can provide suggestions tailored to your needs.

Building a collaborative relationship with your photographer will help make the session a success.

*Bonus Tip*
Choose a photographer that will take the lead in design, clothing, and application, if you are unsure of your direction and need extra guidance.

3. Plan Your Wardrobe and Styling

Your wardrobe plays a huge role in shaping the final image. Consider the following:

  • Color Palette: Choose colors that reflect your brand. Solid colors typically work well - avoid overly busy patterns.
  • Fit and Comfort: Ensure your clothing fits well and feels comfortable, as this will help you look relaxed during the session. Long sleeve or 3/4 sleeves are usually best for business portraits.
  • Layering Options: Bring a few outfit changes to add variety and flexibility to your session.
  • Accessories: Select accessories that complement your look without distracting from your face. Avoid reflective or large jewelry.

Your wardrobe can elevate your professional image and reinforce your branding message.

4. Focus on Grooming and Makeup

Well-groomed hair and subtle makeup can make a big difference:

  • Hair: Style your hair as you normally would - try not to cut or color your hair within 1 week before your session. Don't forget to groom facial hair - eyebrows, nose, ears, beard, etc.
  • Skin Care: Prioritize your skincare routine in the days leading up to your shoot to ensure a healthy glow. Hydration is also a must for beautiful skin.
  • Makeup: Applying your makeup as you normally would is usually the best practice. You want to look like you - on your best day.
  • Fingernails: Have clean and manicured nails for your session day. Even if you don't think you're hands will be in the final image.

Taking care of these details helps you feel confident and ensures your images come out polished.

5. Prepare

Finally, a smooth day-of experience requires a bit of planning:

  • Rest Well: A good night’s sleep will help you look fresh and energized.
  • Hydrate and Eat: Stay hydrated and have a light meal before the session to maintain energy levels.
  • Arrive Early: Plan to arrive a few minutes early to settle in and review any last-minute details.
  • Bring Essentials: Pack a small bag with makeup for touch-ups, water, and any additional wardrobe options.

These practical steps help ensure you’re relaxed and ready to shine in front of the camera.

CELEBRATE!

A successful headshot or branding session is built on thoughtful preparation. By defining your goals, selecting the right photographer, planning your wardrobe and styling, and taking care of your grooming and logistics, you set the stage for professional images that truly reflect your brand. With these tips in hand, you can approach your session with confidence, knowing that every detail has been thoughtfully considered.

Enjoy the process and get ready to present your best self to the world!
