Becoming a Mom is one of the most amazing things that can happen in a woman's life. For those that choose mommy-hood, the instant you hold your new baby in your arms, your world will change. Forever. No one tells you that your heart will actually ache - a physical and emotional ache - with the love that you have for that tiny little being. Your heart aches with love as you watch them sleep in their baby bed, (still sucking on that pacifier that fell out hours ago), and as you watch them fall down for the first time, looking up at you with tears welling up in their eyes. That little bundle of joy will grow - and grow fast.
From the first day of Kindergarten to their first loose tooth, every big moment makes a mom's heart ache. With pride - with love - with hurt, when they hurt. The moments come, and they go, and they change.
My firstborn child, my daughter April, has grown faster than I ever thought possible. Watching her grow into a woman has been an amazing adventure. I'm sitting here remembering those awkward, lanky pre-teen years where her legs were longer than her entire body - we even sang Kermit the Frog's "The Rainbow Connection" as she rode her bike down the street. (Parenting at it's finest.)
Her Middle School and High School years are a blur. I'm not sure I remember anyone ever telling me that my main job in life would be teenage chauffeur. Do I miss that? Not. At. All. But, I do miss the chats in the car, and singing Bohemian Rhapsody at the top of our lungs with the sunroof open.
This past Christmas Day, I got the best present a mom could ask for.
Over the past 8 months my daughter has been busy preparing for life as a mom. As I've watched her grow, both physically and emotionally, I have reflected on my years as her mom. No one told me that 29 years would go by so fast. No one told me how much my heart would grow, and that it could actually grow even more, as I dream about what my new granddaughter will be like.
What I'd like to share most, as I hope that you have made it this far into my ramblings, is that time passes fast. Really fast. I'm so thankful that I have these images to help guide my memory back to the days when my daughter was little. These are all printed images. It didn't take long to find them - thankfully they were not on a hard drive that has been long lost or damaged.
What I want most for you, the reader, is this - in the crazy days as a new mom, make memories that you can reflect back on, with a smile. With love. With that aching in your heart, to hold that newborn baby in your arms just one more time. Love is a beautiful, difficult, amazing thing. Document it. Let me help.
To my beautiful daughter, I look forward to watching you grow into the wonderful mother I know you will be. Let me be the first to tell you how fast she will grow, and how big your heart will become. It will ache - with joy, with hurt, with love. With more love than you ever thought possible. And you wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.
